Through UrbanWatch, Illinois adult volunteers, high school teachers and students will be able to conduct biological inventories of their local open green spaces. Scientists can then use the data to identify long-term changes in urban natural areas. UrbanWatch will provide teachers and students with an opportunity to learn more about urban ecology and enable them to influence wildlife habitats, while helping scientists gather data on urban wildlife statewide. Illinois UrbanWatch is a volunteer monitoring program of urban green spaces written by The Field Museum and coordinated by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR). You will find everything you need to be an UrbanWatcher in the following sections: Field Work Find everything you need to go out in the field including manuals, field guides, and data sheets. This should be your first stop before you start your UrbanWatch monitoring. Data Entry When you return from the field, enter your site survey, visit log, and BUS/BLOCK data here. Data Analysis In the classroom or at home, produce reports on your data or the data of other UrbanWatchers. Analyze site characteristics and taxa from any UrbanWatch site, and use this information to make informed decisions about conservation action at your site. Teacher Experiences Learn from other teachers. Here you will find lessons learned from UrbanWatch in the classroom, conservation action ideas, and resources that have aided other UrbanWatch teachers across the state. Reference Find a glossary to scientific terms and a dichotomous key to help you identify things from the field. |
