The Micro-Herbaria were originally desktop-produced books and are now being developed as inexpensive DVDs. They are most useful to botanists and others who are accustomed to comparing pressed and dried specimens. Previously, each book was a compilation of photocopied or scanned herbarium specimens of plants for a specific area. These were reduced and printed to US letter size (8.5 by 11 inch) and bound in stiff plastic or heavy paper covers. Most of our micro-herbaria books were made using a commercial photocopier with microfine toner (Minolta EP-415), and with the voltage internally adjusted to give low-contrast and high-resolution images. Copies reduced by 66% were obtained directly from the herbarium specimens. ![]() We are now able to store digital images of the specimens in computer memory using a large flat-bed scanner (UMAX 2100 XL). After manipulating the images to lighten dark areas, and darken notes in pencil or faded ink, we obtain high-resolution color scans which we can print to a DVD. The following list is of currently available micro-herbaria on DVD. We still have a supply of books made with the photocopier (not color), for many of these titles, but the cost of mailing them is prohibitively expensive. Anyone willing to pay the shipping price for these heavy books, or has a friend passing through Chicago, is welcome to have them. Other DVD's will become available as lists and specimen scans are put together. To order or for more information, please contact rrc@fieldmuseum.org. |
